Unveiling Qurbani 2023 Eligibility: Discover Who Qualifies

It is obligatory for every sane adult Muslim resident who possesses excess wealth, be it in the form of silver weighing fifty tolas or its equivalent value in cash or assets, to perform the sacrifice during the days of Eid al-Adha. This excess wealth can be in the form of gold, silver, jewelry, trade goods, surplus household items, or any property such as land or houses beyond one’s primary needs and usage. However, it is not a condition for this wealth to have been in possession for a full year.

In the given scenario, if the value of fifty tolas of silver is determined, and if the mentioned individual possesses cash equal to or exceeding that value during the days of Eid al-Adha, then the obligation of sacrifice will apply, provided that the amount exceeds their essential life necessities.

Hadith About the importance of Qurbani

There is a narration from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said on the day of Eid al-Adha: “No person has performed a better deed today than shedding blood (i.e., offering the sacrifice). However, if someone has good relations with their relatives, it is better than the act of sacrifice alone.” (Al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib: 2/277)

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “On the day of sacrifice, no act of worship is dearer to Allah than shedding blood (i.e., offering the sacrifice). The slaughtered animal will come on the Day of Resurrection with its horns, hair, and hooves, and the blood of the sacrifice is accepted by Allah before it even falls on the ground. Therefore, rejoice in it and please your hearts.” (Mishkat al-Masabih)

This narration highlights the significance of the act of sacrifice in the sight of Allah and the rewards associated with it. It emphasizes the acceptance and value of the sacrifice in the eyes of Allah, indicating the importance of performing this act with a sincere and joyful heart.

Conditions for the Obligation of Sacrifice:

  1. Islam: Sacrifice is not obligatory on non-Muslims.
  2. Residence: It is not obligatory for a traveler to offer a sacrifice, but it is obligatory for a resident.
  3. Wealth: The individual must possess the minimum amount of wealth required for sacrifice. This refers to the same threshold that makes Zakat obligatory, not the amount required for Sadaqat al-Fitr (charity given at the end of Ramadan).
  4. Freedom: Only free individuals are obligated to offer a sacrifice. A slave, who does not possess wealth, is not obligated to offer a sacrifice because worship through financial means is not applicable to them.

It is not a condition for offering a sacrifice to be male. Women are also obligated to offer a sacrifice in the same way as men, with the additional requirement of being mature (reached the age of puberty). There is some difference of opinion regarding whether the obligation applies to immature individuals.

If an immature person is obligated to offer a sacrifice, there are different opinions regarding who will bear the cost of the sacrifice. According to the apparent view, neither the immature person themselves nor their father (who is responsible for their financial obligations) is obligated to offer a sacrifice. This is the ruling mentioned in the books Al-Durr al-Mukhtar, Bahar-e-Shariat, and other sources.

The Duration for Offering Sacrifice in Dhul-Hijjah: Flexibility and Conditions

According to the explanation given by Hazrat Allama Mufti Amjad Ali Azami (may Allah have mercy on him) in “Bahar-e-Shariat,” the time period for offering the sacrifice is from the morning of the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah until the sunset of the 12th of Dhul-Hijjah. Sacrifice becomes obligatory whenever the conditions of obligation are met within this entire time period.

It is not necessary to offer the sacrifice only on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah. There is flexibility within the entire time period, and one can offer the sacrifice at any time during this period. If the conditions of obligation were not met in the beginning of the time period (i.e., on the morning of the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah) and were fulfilled later, or if the conditions were present initially but are not present now (i.e., before the sunset of the 12th of Dhul-Hijjah), then the obligation of sacrifice will depend on the fulfillment of the conditions at the respective times.

In summary, if the conditions for the obligation of sacrifice were not met initially but were fulfilled later within the time period, it becomes obligatory. Conversely, if the conditions were met initially but are not present now, the obligation of sacrifice no longer remains.

Conclusion

Qurbani is a significant act of worship in Islam, symbolizing submission to Allah and expressing gratitude for His blessings. Muslims who meet the eligibility criteria and possess the required wealth are obligated to perform this act during the designated time period. By doing so with sincerity and a joyful heart, believers can attain spiritual rewards and please Allah.
